Workshop Title: The Newcomer Book Tasting: Accessible Texts for Newcomers and Emergent Readers
Description: Pull up a chair for an enjoyable and relaxed "Book Tasting" designed specifically for educators of Newcomer mulitilingual learners and emergent readers! In this interactive session, we will sample a diverse menu of highly accessible genres - from wordless picture books to texts with repetitive structures and more. Moving beyond traditional, one-size-fits-all reading methodologies, we will critically examine which materials truly engage emergent readers. You will leavee with a curated list of "tried and true" titles and broad-minded strategies to build a classroom library that honors every student's unique linguistic journey.
Objectives:
Identify and Evaluate Accessible Genres: Participants will be able to analyze text structures to determine their effectiveness in lowering affective filters and building reading confidence in emergent reader students.
